Day 351

Updated: Oct 20

As we get closer to the end of the year, I find myself thinking more about the people in my life, the connections I’ve made, and the ones that may have run their course.

It’s interesting how much can change in a year. People come into your life, some stay longer than expected, and others slowly become people you used to know. Sometimes there’s a falling out, sometimes life simply takes you in different directions, and sometimes you just realize that a connection no longer fits where you are in life.

And honestly, I think that’s okay.

One thing I’ve learned is that just because someone has been a part of your life doesn’t automatically mean they need to remain a part of your future. Having history with someone doesn’t guarantee them a permanent place in your life. You can appreciate the memories, respect what once was, and still recognize that things are different now.

I also think people sometimes get too comfortable with the idea that access to someone is permanent. They assume that because you were once close, they will always be entitled to the same version of you. But people change, relationships change, and boundaries change. Not every connection is meant to stay the same forever.

As we approach a new year, I’ve been thinking about how important it is to be intentional about the people I surround myself with. I want genuine connections, mutual respect, good energy, and people who make life feel lighter rather than more complicated. I want relationships where kindness isn’t mistaken for obligation and where respect doesn’t disappear simply because someone doesn’t get what they want.

Life is already complicated enough. I don’t think we need to carry unnecessary drama, forced connections, or relationships that no longer feel right just because we have history with someone.

And no, this doesn’t mean holding grudges or wishing anyone anything bad. Sometimes moving forward simply means accepting people for who they are, accepting a relationship for what it is now, and no longer expecting it to be what it once was.

There’s a difference between being on good terms with someone and giving them the same place in your life they once had. You can be friendly without being close. You can wish someone well without needing them around. You can forgive the past without reopening a door you’ve already decided to close.

I think there’s something freeing about understanding that you don’t owe everyone continued access to you just because they knew you at a different point in your life.

So, as this year winds down, I’m not interested in carrying every connection forward just for the sake of familiarity. I’d rather make room for genuine relationships, new experiences, personal growth, and the kind of peace that comes from knowing I’m being intentional with my time and energy.

Not everyone needs to come with me into the next chapter, and that’s not a bad thing. Sometimes growth means knowing what to keep, what to appreciate from a distance, and what to leave where it belongs.

The goal isn’t to enter a new year with fewer people. It’s to enter it with the right people, the right intentions, and a better understanding of what deserves a place in your life.

And honestly, that’s a pretty good place to start.

Signed, Paulina.
